Description:
A rebuilt wooden Motte and Bailey castle, complete with Lord's home and peasants' houses.
Review:
Settlement at Mountfitchet Castle dates back to the Iron Age. The main attraction today is the Norman motte and bailey. All the buildings and defences have been rebuilt on the site as they would have appeared just after the Conquest. You climb the steep hill to the motte, and this makes you realise just what an excellent defensive site the castle is. Peasant’s huts, livestock and the chapel all add to the evocative nature of the site. Step inside the Hall and you immediately notice the difference from how ordinary people lived. This is an excellent way to bring the topic of Castles to life.
