Description:
This is three museums in one – St Paul’s Church, which was Bede’s monastery; the specially built museum building, based on the design of a Roman villa, exploring the life and times of Bede; and a working farm that shows Anglo-Saxon methods of farming.

Review:
The Church is about 100 yards walk from the museum, and still retains some of the original Anglo-Saxon building as well as a small exhibition of Saxon church remains. The Museum explores the wealth of Northumbria as well as life in the monastery. Perhaps the most appealing part of the site is the working farm, where traditional breeds of animals, crops and buildings can all be seen. These are all based on archaeological evidence from around the region. The site is compact, but thoughtfully presented to give a detailed impression of life in Gyrwe, as Jarrow was known, in the 8th Century.
