Ranging from East Anglia to a desert island in the West Indies, to New England and native American tribes, this novel explores the world as seen by people in the C17th. As much a book about ideas as a story, this traces Jennet's growth from child to adult, her intellectual awakening and her attempt to prove the fallacy of witchfinding and witches. This is a great story, of families at war - sometimes literally - as well as of ideas and gives a great feel of the issues and tensions in C17th society. Good A Level students could happily cope with this, and it is a great read for teachers.
