Description:
The story of the British struggle to abolish slavery.
An excellent book - perhaps the best of the current rash of 'slavery' books. Detailed yet focused, follows the story of the Abolitionists and their attempts to reverse public opinion and abolish slavery.
Clarkson, Wilberforce, Equiano are all here, as well as a host of other, lesser-known but equally important members of the campaign - not just in England, but in America, the West Indies and Africa.
Detailed yet immensely readable, this follows the evolution of the campaign from a meeting in London through petitions, mass meetings, the collection of detailed evidence, sugar boycotts, ecstasy and despair until abolition of the 'hateful trade' and finally total abolition are successful in Britain.
Highly recommended.
