Description:
A Holocaust memoir for younger children.
This is the short story of Isabella and her family, who lived in Poland at the start of the Second World War. In simple – but not simplistic – terms the events of the War unfold, the family are sent first to the ghetto and then to the camp. Isabella loses her family, but manages to survive through her aunt, to be liberated at the end of the war by Russian soldiers. Aimed at Year 6, the language level is appropriate, and the way the memoir deals with difficult and emotive topics – making them accessible yet provocative – is a model for us all. Could also be used in Key Stage 3 by less sure readers. Highly recommended.
