Review:
Containing over 900 Grade II Listed Buildings, and set in a Conservation Area, Port Sunlight retains much of the atmosphere of a turn of the century model village. Cared for by the Village Trust, it is possible to understand the attraction - both for Lever and for his workers - of the village.
Built on 56 acres of marshland, the village and the factory were the foundation stone of Lever Brothers prosperity. A village trail leaflet guides you round the most important places, and helps you discover just what it was that made -and still makes - this area special. Even today, with some of the surrounding areas full of boarded up houses and low prices, the 'model village' has its attractions for residents. There is also perhaps one of the largest war memorials in the country, as well as a memorial garden to those who lost their lives in the Hillsborough football stadium disaster.
