Description:
Interviews with the last 21 surviving veterans of the First World War.
What a read! The personal lives, experiences and thoughts of the last remaining - many of whom have since died - veterans of the British forces in WW1. Their modesty jumps out of the pages, as does their common view which is clearly that war is not the way to solve disputes between countries.
We all, as historians, understand the problem of hindsight and how it colours one's view of what went on many years ago, but even taking that into account this is an amazing book. Putting the veterans lives and opinions into context - of what went before and what has happened to them since - makes their descriptions of their expereinces even more rivetting.
Highly recommended.
