Description:
A history of the Holocaust in the words of survivors.
Some of the extracts here are very familiar, some not so. All are moving, in a very matter of fact way.
Content is broken down into sections - 1933-1939, War, The Ghetto, The Camps, Resistance, Death March, Liberation, Aftermath. Perhaps the most poignant section is the Epilogue, when survivors look back on their experiences and try to explain exactly what it meant to them.
This book is a treasure trove for teachers - the short extracts, the complementary experiences, the randomness of survival, all add to our understanding of an event that is perhaps impossible to explain - but which it is important that we never forget. I found myself often at the same time sad and exhilarated by the depth of human feeling. Read this book!
