Description:
The book of the BBC television series of the same name.
I was bought this book for Christmas and had put off reading it, having seen some of the tv series. How silly! What an immensely readable book, honest, thought-provoking and scrupulously fair. The most chilling aspect of the book, like the tv series, is not the sheer scale of the murder in the camps, but the unrepentant nature of many of the SS who operated Auschwitz and other camps. Many of those interviewed did not adopt the 'I was only following orders' excuse, so common in Stlain's executioners, but really still feel that what they did was justified.
The interviews are the highlight of the book, but it is commendable also for its clarity. I would not hesitate in recommending it to A Level students, and many parts of it are accessible to good GCSE candidates too. An excellent introduction to many of the debates about the Final Solution, who knew what, where and when. Recommended!
