Description:
Narrow Gauge railway running 11.5 miles up the Rheidol Valley.
Review:
A spectacular ride, climbing over 600 ft from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge. The railway, although narrow gauge, shows the power of mining in the area- it was built - opening in 1902 - to carry lead from the mines and timber down to the coast at the port of Aberystwyth. It carried passengers right from the start, and still uses many of the original coaches. The steam locomotives date from 1923-1938. The line remained British Railways' last steam operated railway until it was privatised in 1989. A stunning way to see the Welsh countryside, but it also shows the economic wealth of the area at the end of the Industrial Revolution.
