Review:
Strikingly situated on a headland separating North and South Bays, the castle ruins give an excellent understanding of the art of castle-siting and building.
A typical Norman stone castle, it didn't last very long. Built by Edward I from 1277, by the mid 1300s it was falling down. Captured by the Welsh 1404-1408 before being restored to English rule. After staying loyal to the Crown in the Civil War, Cromwell ordered it pulled down, hence the ruins we see today.
