Description:
The Paston family and the Wars of the Roses.
What a terrific book! I had no idea that 'might is right 'was quite so widespread in England at the time of the Wars of the Roses. See a house you fancy? Stronger than your opponent? Send in a few retainers and take it! Hold on to it, and the manor, and the income, until eventually, if they have enough influential political support, the owners can persuade the courts to evict you! What an insight into a troubled time. And what an insight into social mobility.
The Pastons must be just about the most famous medieval family, but this book really brings them alive - warts and all. Starting as a peasant farmer - but determined to deny it - the Paston family become indispensible to royalty and peers alike - but still find it hard to make their mark permanently in Medieval society. This book brings their struggles to be upwardly mobile alive, and their trials and tribulations to life.
Absolutely indispensible if you really want to know about life during the Wars of the Roses. Very highly recommended!
