Description:
The Diary of Edie Benson, London, 1940-1941.

Set in Lewisham in 1940 and 1941, this is the fictional diary of Edie Benson, a young girl in London in 1940. She experiences the Blitz, is evacuated to a cruel home in Wales, and manages to return home. Her father, a fire-fighter, is a hero, and her mother joins the ARP. Although a fictional account, this could be the experience of any number of young people in London in 1940 and therefore provides a good 'feel' for the time. It is also something that Key Stage 3 pupils can easily read for themselves as the pitch of the vocab and the language used is suitable for most readers of that age. As with the rest of this series, it is worth considering if you are looking to encourage independent reading around the subject - perhaps in the school or departmental library - or as the basis for a good story!
