Description:
Explores the relationship between Britain and America during WW2.
Starting with Winston Churchill's famous quote that 'history will bear me out, for I shall write that history myself,' Mark Stoler follows the ups and downs of the 'Special Relationship' between Britain and USA in the fight against Germany and Japan.
It explores the close personal relationship between Churchill and Roosevelt, as well as the successes, and failures, of joint planning, of relationships between politicians, planners and the military. It is as much a diplomatic history as a story of the war, and tries to follow events on both fronts simultaneously, as was actually faced by both countries.
An interesting read, with detail on the behind the scenes activities as well as the big meetings, this puts a new gloss on the way the war was fought. Especially good on the historiography of the topic, and how historians' interpretations of events have changed. Accessible for good A Level students, but more likely to be used as a teacher update.
