Description:
Black loyalists in the American War of Independence and beyond.
What a great narrative history! This is the story of slaves and free blacks who joined the British side in the War of Independence, of their trials and tribulations in America, then in Canada, and finally in Sierre Leone. It is also the story of Wilberfoce, of Clarkson and many others, pushing for liberation.
But mostly it is the untold story of slaves and freemen, of promises made and kept, or not kept as the case may be, and of the early years in Sierra Leone. I could not put it down, as it opened up an unknown - to me - side of history. I wanted to know more of those strong characters that flit through the pages, some re-appearing time and again.
Every so often you read a book that opens up a side of history you previously hadn't even thought about. This is such a book. A Level students could manage this, but more likely this will be read as an update for teachers. Recommended!
