Description:
A fictional diary of a servant girl in London at the time of the Great Exhibition.
Although aimed at Key Stage 2, this book could appeal to pupils in Key Stage 3 studying the Victorians. It is a little far-fetched - the servant girl is in the household of Joseph Paxton during the building of the Crystal Palace, and gets to meet the key characters and see inside the Palace - but it gets over the feel of the period really well. It is an easy read, and all turns out well in the end - despite the 'naughty' child of the couple home from India!
An easy and entertaining read that will appeal to some pupils. Remember, it is fiction, and all that entails in using it as evidence. But it does help pupils begin to see life through Victorian eyes, and that must be to the good.
