Description:
The remains of a Norman motte and bailey castle, with a well-preserved C13th shell-keep.
Review:
A steep climb up the town reminds you why castles were built - to dominate the town as well as for protection. And the view from the motte is superb! As with many English Heritage sites you need to use a lot of imagination to 'people' the site, but the bailey is clear, and the steps up to the shell-keep really do make the point. An excellent site to use your imagination to rebuild the past, and to run wild!
