Description:
46 survivors - most of whom are linked to Beth Shalom in some way or other - tell their stories in an anthology of the Holocaust.
It is only when you read something like this that the full enormity of the Holocaust comes home. Time after time the teller points out that they were the only one of their extended family to survive. Roman Halter, for instance, grew up in Chodecz, Poland, along with 800 other Jews. Only 4 survived.
The scale and reach of the Holocaust is brought home by the variety of experiences, yet most have much in common. Writers come from East and West, North and South, but often have similar things to say. The matter of fact way of telling their stories makes it all seem even more terrifying. And the odd quirks - or acts of great bravery by non-Jews - often meant the difference between death and survival.
Most of these stories could be used to telling effect in the classroom, to personalise events in a way it is often hard to do, to really bring home the tragedy of the Holocaust.
