Based on the journals of Dr Livingstone and the books and newspaper accounts of Stanley, this book relates the story of Dr Livingstone's final attempt to find the source of the Nile, and the expedition of the New York Herald led by Stanley to find and rescue him. It reminds us how much exploration of the Dark Continent captured the public imagination in the 1850s and 1860s and how the RGS was to the forefront of this. There were newspaper circulation wars then too! There is plenty of adventure, clear insight into African civilisations pre-European contact, and of the Arab role in the slave trade of East Africa. A fascinating account, and extremely readable. I couldn't put it down.
