Description:
Uses the memories and accounts of 100 survivors of WW1 to put together a picture of life in Britain at that time.
This is full of interesting insights, based on peoples' memories. Everyone knows, for example, about the 'turnip winter' in Germany in 1917, but what about in England? People were equally short of food at that critical stage of the war, and this is highlighted by accounts of babies dying of malnutrition and cold. Another section that struck me is the common view that everyone knew, throughout 1913-1914, that war was coming - the text books often suggest that war took ordinary people by surprise.
This book is full of delightful memories, of great insights into the lives of ordinary people at home in WW1. An excellent read, and what a good idea to collect these memories before they are gone for ever.
