Review:
The crypt of Ripon Cathedral is believed to be the earliest post-Roman crypt in England, making the Cathedral, in the words of Medieval History Magazine ‘the Oldest Church in England.’ The site of the Cathedral is not as spectacular as others, making it less imposing, but on entering through the main door one instantly sees the wealth of the Medieval Church. Ripon was linked to the very wealthy Fountains Abbey, as well as being the residence of the Archbishop of York. The impressive Pulpitum, although not original, clearly shows the division of religious and secular life, separating the Nave from the Quire. Ripon has the only central tower to have two rounded Norman arches and two Gothic pointed arches, due to a collapse in 1450. The Crypt, built to resemble Christ’s tomb, was used by St.Wilfrid to store his relics. The Cathedral should be visited by anyone looking to compare and contrast Cathedrals. Ripon is not the most Beautiful, nor is it the largest, nor either does it have the richest History, but it has a wonderful character.
