Description:
English Heritage 14th Century Carthusian Charterhouse.
|
Review:
Mount Grace Priory in the best preserved Carthusian Charterhouse in England. Founded in 1398, it still clearly shows the attempt the return to a hermit-like monastic life. The Priory was closed in 1539, thus we have just the ruins to examine. One enters the main site through the 17th century Manor House, into the inner court, the original greeting place for visitors. To the right one can still see the stables. The small church in the centre of the site has an almost complete bell tower, the church is the most complete building, apart from the reconstructed cell. The reconstruction on Cell 8 is impressive, the private walled garden, with its toilet has been reconstructed, as well as the two-floor cell, the cell and workroom have been furnished to give an authentic reconstruction. The purpose of the Carthusian order was to withdraw from the world, this is clearly indicated by this site, it is also a wonderful contrast to the splendours of the local abbeys and Cathedrals. The information provided by English Heritage is detailed, allowing for a productive visit.
