Review:
As a student of Cathedral building I found Carlisle Cathedral fascinating. One enters the Augustinian Cathedral through a doorway in the South Transept, which in itself is not unusual, but one does not enter into a huge Cathedral, but rather a small chapel. This part of the building is enclosed by the stone Pulpitum to the right, St Wilfrid’s Chapel ahead and the Chapel for the King’s Own Royal Border Regiment, this makes the building seem very enclosed. To get past the Pulpitum one walks down an aisle to the East side of the Cathedral, it is only then that one realises that something is very odd. Above the entrance to the aisle is a twisted arch, it is neither Norman, nor gothic as it is a curious ‘S’ shape. Carlisle Cathedral has collapsed many times in its 880 year history, as well as having its stone robbed, most notably by Parliamntary forces in the defence of Carlisle in 1644. The result is that only the Quire, North & South Trancepts and Crossing still exist. The missing Nave, usually the largest part of a Cathedral, gives the building a curios feel, which is added to by the obvious rebuilding work. The Cathedral is worth a visit for the 14th century barrel-vaulted and painted ceiling, for the fine 14th century stained glass or simply for its novelty.
