Review:
Caerlaverock Castle is an impressive landmark, standing guard over the beautiful Solway Firth. With its wide moat, two-towered gatehouse, and imposing battlements, it is the epitome of the medieval castle; built in a triangular shape it demonstrates many features of Castle defence. The castle's turbulent history owes much to its proximity to the English border, it has featured in many sieges. The Maxwell family, who built Caerlaverock Castle, enjoyed peaceful prosperity until the invasion by Edward I. In 1300, Lord Maxwell's garrison was forced to surrender to the overwhelming might of Edwards’s besieging army. During the 16th century Caerlaverock featured in Anglo-Saxon conflict until James VI's accession to the English throne brought peace to the Borders. Peace collapsed in the Civil Wars, and the final siege at Caerlaverock came when the Royalists surrendered to the Covenanters. The castle a fairly complete ruin, making it one of Scotland's finest examples of castle building. As well as the Castle visitors can see; a siege warfare exhibition, an exhibition on the History of Caerlaverlock Castle, a children's adventure park, a nature trail, and the excavations of the original site.
