Description:
A magnificent Fen church with detail from nearly every period of English church architecture.
Review:
The Norman nave dates from around 1170, and the tower - reputedly the largest timber spire in the country - dates from 1200 and is in the Early English style. It was originally detached from the church, as was often the case in marshy fenland areas. By the mid 1300s, Long Sutton was one of the richest communities in Lincolnshire, at one stage boasting 18 resident priests, as well as the monks of Castle Acre Priory, the benefice holder. The church still contains an elaborate monk's cell. An excellent place to see the changes in church architecture over the whole of the medieval period.
