Description:
Originally a Norman Castle, lived in until 1944.
Review:
Famous as the place Charles I was kept prisoner in until his trial and execution in 1649, the Castle was the home of the Governor of the Island until 1944, and so is still very much intact. The Chapel is stunning, and of course you must see the donkeys used to raise water from the well, and the window Charles jumped from in an abortive escape attempt. Also of interest are the gun platforms added in the 17th Century, as an extra layer of defense against the Spanish. An impresive place to study castles!
