Description:
A very handy guide to getting the best out of oral history - how to do it in very easy stages.
This book does exactly what it says on the cover - it is a very handy toolkit for conducting oral history interviews. Plenty of tips on how to get the answers you want, how to organise meetings, how to present your findings - all told in a non-fussy, accessible way. It is obviously based on long experience and good practice.
There is a large section of suggested materials to act as starters for sessions on, for example, family life; homes and living; work; health; education - all jam packed with items designed to provoke remembering and discussion. There is also a 'background to the Fifties and Sixties' section, with key events year by year to get people thinking and talking.
If you are looking to encourage parents and grandparents to be involved in school history projects, or just in adding a local dimension to your Schemes of Work, then this toolkit by the Continuing Education Department of the University of Hertfordshire deserves a very close look. Not much theorising, but plenty of helpful advice based on practicality. Lots of fun too!
