Review:
Unlike Alnwick Castle, (seven miles North of Warkworth) also a residence of the Earls of Northumberland, Warkworth ceased to be a residence in the 16th Century, it therefore retains its original features, there are no later additions disguising the purpose, even the 12th Century Motte and Bailey area can be distinguished. The impressive gatehouse and outer walls display all the classic defensive ingenuity of Castle builders, the part complete Keep contains unfurnished, but recognisable rooms, giving a clear indication of the domestic purpose of a 16th Century Keep. As with most English Heritage sites, the information available to visitors is impressive, the ‘Teachers Handbook’ at £4 is an essential resource for an educational visit. The site provides the perfect opportunity to investigate a Medieval Castle.
