Description:
A study of British political history for AS and A2 students.
Another volume in the Heinemann Advanced History series. This consists of narrative for AS covering Britain from 1929 to Britain 1964 - the impact of the Great Depression, the impact of the Second World War, and an assessment section - specimen examination questions and suggested answers.
The A2 section is much more analytical: there are sections on Chamberlain and Appeasement; Politics and Society 1951-97; and Britain and Northern Ireland 1968-98. Each of these units has specimen examination questions and suggested answers.
There is also a useful bibliography for both AS and A2. Text and language is carefully pitched at an appropriate level.
The format is common to the series, with a narrative AS section and an analytical A2 section, which gives rise to some repetition. The topics are carefully focused on specific specifications, so if you follow the relevant option then this text could be for you. It does an excellent job at introducing content, and in A2 exploring the areas of political debate - but perhaps at a superficial level. The text itself suggests the need for further reading and thought - not a bad thing in itself. An excellent introduction to some quite complex ideas - my students found it interesting and stimulating of further action.
