What can we tell about Victorian Britain from.....a plate!
Title:What can we tell about Victorian Britain from.....a plate!
Keystage: Keystage 3
Type:Teaching
Units & Topics:Britain 1750 -1900
Description:
Powerpoint presentation looking at a Queen Victoria Jubilee plate from 1887 and squeezing the evidence.

What use is a commemorative mug or plate? Plenty! It tells us people bought souvenirs. It tells us what some Victorians thought about Empire - or at least what the official view was. The selected examples on the plate also tell us which parts of Empire were regarded as most important in 1887.
The activity could easily be altered to apply to any other commemorative item, or to slowly reveal each question, or even reveal choices for answers. Plenty of scope. Makes an excellent starter activity for an interpretations exercise too.
