Somme 1st July 1916 - a DVD tour of the Northern Somme Battlefield.
Newly released by 'Pen and Sword' books is this interactive tour of part of the Somme battlefield. It contains some original footage, supplemented by both trench maps and modern maps, as well as detailed modern footage and stills covering the key areas of the conflict. As a bonus there is also a discussion between three academics from Birmingham University about the Battle of the Somme and its consequences. What a brilliant idea! The battlefield is chopped into small sections and the viewer is taken step by step through the action of July 1916. Interspersing original footage with that taken today links the events then with the landscape today and the commentary brings the whole thing to life. Excellent as a follow up to a visit to the Somme, or if you can't go yourself. A perfect guide to prepare for a tour. I look forward to seeing the Southern part too.
