'Think, Pair, Share.'
An effective way of making learning active is to get pupils to think about something - a source, an artefact, a picture - then 'pair' - talk to their neighbour about it; then 'share' with either a bigger group -4? - or the whole class. A good way of getting pupils to look in depth at something too.
